If you are anything like me (ie leans more towards panic packing the whole house) then packing for your first Disney trip can be extremely overwhelming, especially if you aren't use to the Florida weather conditions. In Florida you always have to be prepared for pop up showers, a few chillier than usual days, super heat and humidity all while trying to brave crowds at the most Magical Place on Earth. I know, stressful!
Here is your definitive guide for some must haves in your bag, plus grab our free printable to keep you from over packing or missing key items at the end of this article!
Backpack, fanny pack or comfortable purse. You will want to take photos and videos on your phone, carry cash or cards for food and souvenirs, tote sunglasses or hats and carry sunscreen, chapstick or tylenol so a comfy secure bag s a must to carry these items! When traveling with kids be sure whatever bag you choose is comfortable for their belongings in addition to your own ie bottles, diapers and wipes.
Refillable water bottle. We know Disney can get expensive and quick, thankfully you can grab a cup of water free of charge at most (if not all) eateries within the parks.
Rechargeable battery pack. You will want to capture as many videos and photos with your phone as well as utilize the My Disney Experience app to access Genie+ (for more information on Genie+ click here!)
Ponchos/Umbrella The weather in Florida can be unpredictable especially during the summer heat through hurricane season, one minute it can be blue skies and the next it be a downpour. Be sure to pack a sturdy collapsible umbrella or well made poncho to throw on if you are caught by a sudden rain shower.
Ziplock Bags I like to organize my. backpack via ziplock bags for easy grab and go access, plus its a great place to stow your phone or wallet should you ride a water ride or get caught in a rain shower.
Sunscreen This is a must have! No one is immune to the brutal sun at Disney or it's lasting effects, rather than deal with the burn try to prevent it with some high spf sunscreen, remember to reapply after a water ride or sweating.
Aloe Lotion Just in case you get slightly (or more) burned by the suns rays some aloe vera is just what's needed! (I have also read apple cider vinegar relieves a sunburn fast, I can attest it does take the burn out faster if you can deal with the smell)
Moleskin or Bandaids Not many people know what mole skin bandages are but man they saved my feet! They are essentially soft bandages that stick to the skin to prevent excessive rubbing, I love them for the heels of my shoes to prevent blisters. Bandaids work also!
Gold Bond Powder No one likes to talk of chafing but it can and does get the best of us at Disney. It is the perfect breeding ground so pack some Gold Bond and sprinkle as needed, they also make travel sized for your backpack!
Wet Wipes Post-Covid Disney still has some measures in place, with that being said I do still carry wet wipes to wipe hands down after touching rides, before eating, potty breaks ect.
Chapstick Between the heat, huffing and puffing from power walking to catch a ride and excessive water my lips were badly chapped after day 1, be sure to pack your favorite lip moisturizer.
Pain Reliever You will be walking, a lot, and with that comes some aches and pains. Pack whatever pain reliever works best for you, there are also travel sized packets available at most gas stations to stow in your park travel bag.
Tums or Pepto Eating is a HUGE deal at Disney (at least for my family) and can cause some upset tummies between the rides. Be prepared with some anti-acids to help calm your tummy qualms.
Ear Plugs or Ear Protectors Some kiddos are especially sensative to the noise at Disney, and you may not always be aware of this sensativity. I carry a extra set of ear plugs just in case my son wants a break from all the noise or gets scared from the fireworks.
Power Strip We found in order to charge our phones plus portable chargers we needed more outlets, to be prepared our next trip I brought a power strip that also had USB outlets for easy charging for all in our hotel room.
Glow Sticks Let's be honest, my kid will always want the glow sticks at night, these can be purchased for 1.25 at our Dollar Tree and he won't know the difference. Money saving tip!
Travel Docs/Cash Be sure to pack insurance cards, ID, license, reservation docs, medical docs (if needed) and some extra cash for a buffer.
Disney Pins My kiddo loves to be prepared with a wide variety of pins ready to trade, we grabbed a pack from Amazon to give him a nice start to trade with Cast Members at the parks.
Kids Necessities Whatever your child needs such as diapers, swim diapers, kids sunscreen, kids pain reliever, gas drops ect.
Pocket Travel Blanket It can be slightly chilly in the evening waiting on the fireworks, also who wants to sit on the well walked on ground? We grabbed 2 travel blankets on Amazon that stow easily in my backpack to sit on while enjoying the fireworks or throw around ourselves if we get cold.
Hand bands, Hair Ties or Hats Must have! First day my hair was a mess within a hour of arriving, I could easily throw it in a bun and keep on moving.
Travel Deodorant I had never experienced my deodorant giving out after multiple hours in the sweltering humidity and heat until our very 1st Disney trip, I now pack a travel size just in case I need a touch up during the day.
Travel Makeup Remover Wipes I don't wear makeup aside from some tinted spf moisturizer while at the parks, I carry these wipes just to wipe my face off which helps me feel fresh throughout the day.
Sunglasses Constantly squinting to see in the sunlight gives me the worst headache, if you are like myself be sure to pack some cheap shades to help (cheap just in case they get lost, not Costas)
Moisture Wicking Socks No one wants sweaty feet in shoes, I found some awesome moisture wicking socks and they helped immensely with blisters and comfort.
Breathable Shirts I thought I was playing it smart with 100% cotton tees, boy was I wrong. Firstly a word of caution, a 100% cotton tee does not breath, it soaks any moisture into it and takes forever to dry from said moisture. I have since tried tees specifically labeled as breathable and moisture wicking and they are so so much better!
Bathing Suit Rather than worry needlessly about my undies getting wet (bras take forever to dry) after rides I now just wear a bikini under my clothes, it dries quick and provides the same support as normal undies.
Shoe Inserts I "thought" I had some great tennis shoes, I apparently did not and rather than spend $$$ on new shoes at Disney I now bring gel inserts to slip in my shoes to help with foot exhaustion.
Chilly Pad If you are susceptible to getting overheated or just want to be prepared for the Florida heat these little cooling pads are amazing! Pour water on them, snap them or swirl them in the air to activate the cooling effects and wipe down, they really help!
Portable Fan Another great way to stay cool, clip onto a stroller to point at the kid/s or on the handle to point at yourself. A nice breeze really helps keep you dry and cool.
